A Survivor Broadcasts Hope and Balance to Caregivers. The Westchase Dogfather. A Sleepless Night Leads to Westchase. Back in 2. 00. 9, a simple day at the park with her children left current Bridges resident Barbara Hessler Griffith so restless, she was unable to sleep later that evening. While she was not a resident at the time, Griffith enjoyed bringing her children to Baybridge Park to play.
On one occasion, she noticed a nearby house for sale. I didn’t have an appointment, so I just walked up and knocked on the door and asked, ‘Can I see your house?’” she said. After the sleepless night, Griffith was determined to make Westchase home. I really liked the community even more than the house, so I decided to buy the home,” she said. Now it is her love of the same community that drove her step up and serve on the Westchase Community Development District (CDD), in a vacancy left by the longtime Supervisor Mark Ragusa.
The daughter of a military dad and an Italian mother, Griffith grew up in southern Italy. When asked what she misses most about her far away home, her answer comes quickly. The food!” she said.
She also shared that she admires the philosophy of the workers there. They work to live, not live to work,” she explained. Griffith attended an American school on the military base.
An athlete at heart, she enjoyed playing volleyball and softball, ran cross country and was the captain of the cheerleading squad. After graduation, she decided to come to the states for an American education. As a business management major, she earned degree from Frostburg State University in Maryland. Ready for another change, Griffith was ready to leave the cold northern temperatures for someplace warm and on the water. She picked Tampa to visit and a drive over the Howard Frankland Bridge made the decision for her. I’m home,” she thought to herself as she saw the spectacular view. Once she landed a job, she made the move to Florida.
Today, Griffith is a busy mom to Matthew, 1. Katie, 8. Both attend Westchase schools and Griffith enjoys volunteering where she sees the opportunities.
Her desire to serve, she said, comes from the examples set by her father. He had a sense of service,” she said. We take care of ourselves, take care of our families and then what’s left we give back to the community,” she explained. Over the years, she has served as a soccer and Little League coach. She is also active with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at both Westchase Elementary and Davidsen Middle Schools.
Griffith also has a heart for the homeless. She makes time to volunteer at Trinity Café, where the homeless or hungry can get a free meal.
She enjoys serving as a table host, she said. As host, she sits with the homeless and has conversations with them while they eat. As for her own community, Griffith attended a CDD meeting to talk about our parks. It was during that meeting that she learned of the vacant position. I saw it as an opportunity to participate so I threw my hat into the ring,” she said.
We’re an older community now and we need to continue to make the right investments.”. While she is not afraid of change and making suggestions toward change, there are some areas of Westchase Griffith feels should remain the same. Watch The Man From Earth Dailymotion.
There are staples in Westchase. Linebaugh Avenue should always be a staple. The brick with the black and gold should never be changed,” she said. Griffith also wants to reach out to the county to work on connectivity with Westchase.
Westchase is a gem and a big resource of taxes for the county. We need their help in some areas,” she expressed. Once concern she has is busing to local schools for residents. Her concern is that instead of walking to the tunnel that crosses underneath Linebaugh Avenue, students will attempt to cross the street instead. I want the county to see how Westchase moves and to consider how safe that is,” she explained. With her passion to serve and love of her community, Westchase is certainly in great hands – with Griffith among those working to keep Westchase a premier community in Tampa Bay.
